As a youngster Stan Turner has a brush with the law,   gets interested in the legal system and decides he wants to be an attorney. He is mysteriously forewarned, however, that the path to his dream will be difficult and fraught with danger. At every turn Stan is confronted with seemingly insurmountable obstacles, yet he pushes forward, undaunted by the unknown forces that seek to derail him. Forced into the United States Marines by a vicious twist of fate, Stan leaves his wife and family and reports for duty. On his first day he unwittingly befriends a serial killer and soon finds himself charged with the murder of his drill sergeant.

Step into the shoes of Dallas attorney, Stan Turner, in the late 1970's as he begins the practice of law.  Broke but determined to get his practice going, Stan starts   with only a $2,000 cash advance on his American Express Card.  It's the late 70's,  a boom time in Dallas, and there are a lot of shady oil and gas and real estate promoters around.  It isn't long before a couple of Stan's clients get him in serious trouble. When Stan's wife, Rebekah, is arrested for murder and a client turns out to be a ghost, Stan turns in his legal pad for a detective's notebook and goes to work to solve these most perplexing mysteries.

Stan takes on the defense of a young college student, Sarah Winters, accused of murdering her own baby. Stan knows this is way out of his league so he convinces his old criminal law professor, Harry Hertel, to be second chair. Much to his dismay, however, midway into the trial Harry disappears. Bad goes to worse as Stan is stalked by a religious fanatic who calls himself Doomsayer. Then he narrowly escapes an attempt on his life and suddenly is the main attraction in a media frenzy. Despite all these distractions, Stan never loses sight of his goal to find out the truth about Sarah’s baby. And when the truth is finally revealed it’s not at all what anyone expects.

Manchee spins a good yarn, and Stan Turner is a believable, likable character that I plan to read again and again. Chris Rogers, author of Bitch Factor and Rage Factor
